Ms. Taylor's Terrific Turtles were busy hatchlings this year! First they helped Flat Squishy complete another epic migrations reaching many exciting places like Hawaii and Great Britain. Then, these Terrific Turtles participated in a letter writing campaign to give a voice to sea turtles in DC! Their letters supported the use of TEDs (Turtle Excluder Devices) on shrimp trawls in the Gulf of Mexico. Each student illustrated why sea turtles need our help and clearly showed their passion for our shared marine environment!

We are so excited to share an up-date from Mrs.Taylor's 1st grade class atHolley Navarre Primary School. Mrs.Taylor's Class, aka "Taylor's Terrific Turtles," adopted Flat Squishy as a class project earlier this school year. Since then their Flat Squishies have traveled the globe spreading awareness about the threats facing sea turtles, their coastal and marine environments and how we can help save them! Thanks to the hard work of Ms. Taylor's 1st grade class, Flat Squishies have been to Germany, Afghanistan, Portland-Oregon, North Dakota, Washington D.C., Mississippi, and Arkansas. Through their adventures they traveled with a Hurricane Hunter and met the author of "Lucky Strike," Bobby Pyron, whose characters share a journey of growth, friendship, and even an adventure to save sea turtles on Padre Island!
Great job Mrs. Taylor's Terrific Turtles! Thank you for helping save sea turtles! #Kidsatwork #saveseaturtles Kids in action! Mrs. Taylor's first grade class out of Holley-Navarre Primary School selected Flat Squishy as a class project. Now thanks to their hard work, Flat Squishies are traveling the globe and spreading awareness about the sea turtle's fight for survival. Who says learning isn't fun and awesome!
Flat Squishy had the opportunity to visit the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Here Squishy got to meet new friends like Calypso, a green sea turtle and all her friends in the blacktip reef shark tank. After Calypso, his next favorite experience was the jellyfish invasion! While seeing all these jellyfish did make him a tad bit hungry, he got to learn more about the relationship been sea turtles and jellyfish. Sea turtles like Squishy and Calypso are important to maintain healthy oceans and one way they help do that is by managing the jellyfish population.
A balanced food web is essential for healthy oceans. Many things are leading to the increase in population of jellyfish, one component is a decline in population of key predators like sea turtles. All species of sea turtles enjoy snacking on jellyfish. The Leatherback sea turtle, the largest species of sea turtle, dines mostly on jellyfish and can consume upwards of 440 lbs. a day! (ocean.org). Jellyfish, like every organism in our oceans have an important role to play but what happens when our oceans are out of balance? Large jellyfish blooms have been reported all throughout our oceans. Populations and swarms are exploding due to multiple variables: global warming, less competition for food, decrease in key predators to name a few. As a result, jellies are changing the balance of the of our oceans ecosystem. Want to learn more about the jelly invasion? Check out these resources: Jellyfish Invasion Jellyfish gone Wild!

Today I visited friends in Kailua Beach, Oahu. Saving sea turtles is tough work, sometimes it's nice to put your flippers up and just talk turtle with friends. We spent the day exploring the island and talking to others who are passionate about sea turtle conservation. Now that I am well rested I am ready for another new adventure. I wonder where my next migration will take me?!?! Mahalo Wiese family for one excellent adventure in Hawaii! ![]() Seminole, Florida: Squishy makes a splash at a pool party!
